The Legend of Lady Godiva
Many centuries ago, the people of Coventry suffered greatly under the heavy taxes imposed by Leofric, Earl of Chester, in order to finance his battles. The young wife of the Earl had compassion with the people and begged Leofric to free them from their tax burden. Half in jest, Leofric agreed to do so, but only if his wife would ride naked on a horse through the streets of Coventry.
He ordered the people to stay at home with closed doors and shutters. If they did not respect this rule they would be threatened with death and would have to pay more taxes. Dressed in only her flowing blonde tresses, Lady Godiva accomplished her task and Leofric kept his promise.
Thus was born the legend of Lady Godiva. So that the legend may long be remembered, her name has been given to the finest Belgian chocolates.
